The Universe Matrix is an end game research item. It is required to finish the game as well as unlock repeatable technologies.
Despite the name "Dyson Sphere Program", the Dyson Sphere is only incidentally required to produce thousands of Universe Matrixes. Because Antimatter is created from Critical Photons which are in turn from the Ray Receiver and Dyson Sphere, you must construct at least part of a Dyson Sphere. In theory however, you could launch a single Small Carrier Rocket and with enough waiting win the game without creating a single shell of the Dyson Sphere.
