"It is a solid combustible ore. It is gradually formed by plants through complex physiological and bio-mechanical changes. It is an energy source and a vital raw material for smelting and chemical production."

Usage[]

Coal is an early game fuel source for both the factory and Icarus. It is the first fuel that can be automatically fed into Thermal Power Stations to supply consistent power. While Logs and Plant Fuel can be loaded and burned in a similar manner to coal, they cannot be automatically mined. Coal is also one of the most energy dense fuels per stack early game (270MJ per stack vs Log's 150MJ and Plant Fuel's 250MJ per stack).

Coal's smelted product Energetic Graphite is more energetic per stack at 675MJ vs 270MJ, making it a better fuel for Icarus due to Icarus' limited inventory space and a slightly more efficient fuel for Thermal Power Plant.

The coal used to create Energetic Graphite has 5.4MJ of Energy, 80% of which is recoverable (4.32MJ). The Energetic Graphite has 6.75MJ of Energy, 80% is recoverable (5.4MJ). Discounting the energy used by sorters, the 2 seconds of smelting require 720kJ of power. This means that Energetic Graphite nets 360kJ.
